CHALLENGE

As adults with routines and responsibilities, it can be hard to find time or reason
to play.

Play is unproductive. So for busy adults, it may seem like a waste of time. But, play addresses universal human desires such as connection, curiosity, and imagination.

SOLUTION

Bring more play to your
day-to-day.

Creature Cubes are wooden blocks that let busy adults incorporate small moments of play into their everyday lives. They're designed around the concept of building creatures, and users can arrange the pieces in their own unique configurations.

PROCESS

To understand how the pieces would work together as a stackable system, I set up a gridded Illustrator document and experimented with different forms and packaging concepts.

I made paper models to figure out scale, then cut, painted, sanded, and applied a sealant to each piece.

Creature Cubes' type system includes Azo Sans and Object Sans. The simple geometry of both typefaces allude to a system of blocks, allowing the typography and the blocks themselves to complement each other. I wanted the blocks to feel full of life, so I used an array of vibrant colors for the blocks and digital elements.

I created two additional deliverables to supplement the blocks: a packaging concept and a one-page marketing site.

TAKEAWAYS

I had never embarked on a woodworking project. It proved to be challenging, but it was exciting to explore a new medium. I discovered interesting parallels between my processes for creating digital versus physical products. The slowness and preciseness I honed on this project are skills that are applicable to all future work.
