Maggie and I conducted a "How might we..." exercise with our client candidates to better understand their needs and what deliverables we could create to meet those needs.

The project types vary widely based on client needs: a typical project might consist of anything from a marketing site, to packaging design, to e-commerce (or a combination). Each project was led by a team of students consisting of a Project Lead and 3-5 Designers and Developers.

ACCESSIBILITY INITIATIVE

Accessibility has always been important to Scout. Every Studio member was told to do basic things like check their color contrast and include alt text for images. But without guidelines that were specific to our organization, or at the very least an explanation of why accessibility is important, it felt like our approach to accessibility at Scout was misguided.

We needed to set a clear expectation that inclusive design and development is a crucial consideration from the beginning. So, Maggie and I created a team focused on accessibility research, This team would create Scout-specific resources for our members including design & development standards lists, checklists, and a
workshop outline. I provided feedback for the designer resources being created.

The research team, led by Catherine Titcomb, did an incredible job synthesizing their findings into these deliverables that will hopefully enable Scout to create more inclusive products.

TAKEAWAYS

I watched Scout evolve a lot over time. It was rewarding to be in a position as Design Director where I could enact change to hopefully make our process more meaningful and exciting for future designers and developers.
